MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The 2003
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) men’s golf Championship
begins this weekend, April 25-26, with the first 36 holes of the
72-hole Championship. The first two rounds will be held at Gates
Park Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa. The final 36 holes will be played
May 2-3, at Bos Landen Golf Resort in Pella, Iowa. Friday rounds
begin at 11:00 a.m. and Saturday rounds begin at 9:00 a.m. Central
College is the host of the 2003 men’s golf Championship.
Both Gates Park and Bos Landen are par-72 courses.
Gates Park will play at 6,839 yards and Bos Landen will play at
6,809 yards.
Central has won the last two IIAC golf titles and
23 of the last 27. Last year, the Dutch posted a team score of 1203
behind three top-10 finishers to edge runner-up Wartburg College
(1236) by 33 strokes. Simpson College (1244) and Luther College
(1245) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Returning Players: Eight
former All-Conference players are expected to participate in the
2003 Championship led by two-time All-Conference performer Josh
Luehmann of Simpson and 2002 runner-up Jordan Ryan
of Luther. Luehmann finished ninth as a freshman in 2000
and as a junior in 2002. Ryan shot a 302 and won a playoff with
Central’s Jon Hietbrink to place second, six strokes behind medalist
Tim White of Central.
Other returning All-Conference players include
Central sophomore Nick Grossman, Wartburg junior
Shaun Guyer and Luther senior Phil Haug,
all of whom shot a 306 in 2002. Following a playoff, Grossman finished
sixth, Guyer was seventh and Haug was eighth.
Three All-Conference performers from 2001 will
also be competing - Central junior Patrick McElyea (8th
while playing with Coe), Luther senior Andy Chansley (9th)
and Wartburg junior Dan Schmitz (11th).
Other 2002 top-20 finishers returning to this year’s
field include Buena Vista’s Mark Widick (t-18th),
Central’s Jake Pearson (t-11th) and Jeff
Osby (t-11th), Coe’s Josh Ketter (t-14th)
and Drew Westberg (t-17th), and Simpson’s Mike
Martin (t-14th).
Following is a review of each school’s season with
its finish and top individual in each tournament at which the school
participated. Also included is the season stroke average and top
round for each individual expected to participate in the Conference
Championship.
