IOWA CONFERENCE MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

April 23, 2003

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) men’s tennis Championship will take place Thursday-Saturday, April 24-26, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Buena Vista University is the host of the 2003 Championships that will be played at Clark Racquet Center on Coe College’s campus, and Noelridge Park and Veterans Park tennis courts. Should inclement weather force the matches indoors, the indoor courts at Coe and Westfield Tennis Club will be used.

The three-day Championship will feature an eight-team Dual Team Championship on Thursday, a three flight singles Championship and a two flight doubles Championship on Friday and Saturday.

Team Championship: The eight-team dual team Championship, which was seeded by a vote of the Conference tennis coaches conducted following the conclusion of the regular season, begins at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Coe College is the two-time defending Conference Champion and is seeded first in this year’s Team Championship. The Kohawks have a 20-2 record this season, including a 20-0 mark against Division III opponents and a 4-0 record against Iowa Conference teams. Luther College, last year’s runner-up, finished this season with a 17-8 record (7-1 in the IIAC) and earned the second seed. Central College is the third seed with an 11-9 overall record (7-2 in the IIAC).

The remaining seeds for the IIAC Team Championship are: #4 Simpson College (8-7 overall, 8-3 IIAC), #5 Wartburg College (5-8, 5-4), #6 Cornell College (6-13, 6-6), #7 Loras College (4-9, 3-6), #8 Buena Vista University (3-13, 3-7).

The team Championship, including consolation matches, will be played to completion to determine the finish of all teams for places one through eight. Should the team Championship not be completed on Thursday, it will be concluded prior to the start of the singles Tournament on Friday.

Individual Flighted Tournament: Individuals are placed in flights based on the players’ strength. The draw for the singles and doubles Tournament will be available Thursday afternoon and will be posted on the Iowa Conference web site at that time.

The Individual Flighted Tournament begins at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday unless the team Championship is not completed on Thursday. Flight A matches will be at Coe College, Flight B and C will be at Veterans Park.
