MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its All-Academic
Team for the spring 2003 season. One hundred ninety-nine student-athletes
from the Conference’s six spring sports met the set requirements
for recognition.
To be eligible for All-Academic Team honors a student-athlete
must participate at the varsity level, be at least a sophomore in
academic standing and attain a 3.5 or better grade point average
(on a 4.0 scale). This marks the first year that sophomores are
eligible for Conference All-Academic recognition.
The 2003 IIAC Spring All-Academic Team is comprised
of 67 sophomores, 74 juniors and 58 seniors. Luther College has
a Conference-high 37 student-athletes earn All-Academic honors.
Loras College has 28 student-athletes honored followed by Wartburg
College with 27, Buena Vista University with 22 and Coe College
with 20.
One hundred-five of the student-athletes honored
were track and field athletes, including 78 women and 27 men. Thirty-four
of those honored were softball players, 28 were baseball players,
19 were men’s tennis players and 13 were men’s golfers.
Sixty-eight members (34.2 percent) of the 2003
spring All-Academic Team earned similar honors in either the fall
or winter season. Sixteen of Luther’s 37 spring All-Academic Team
members earned similar honors in the fall or winter. Coe had 10
repeat honorees including Beth Rohlena, the only
student-athlete to earn All-Academic honors three times during the
2002-03 academic year. Central had nine repeat honorees followed
by Cornell and Loras with seven each.
