UPPER IOWA’S KLEVE NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® SOFTBALL TEAM; FIVE IIAC STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD TEAM

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . Upper Iowa University’s Chyanne Kleve (Waucoma, Iowa/Turkey Valley HS) was named to the Verizon Academic All-America® College Division Softball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. CoSIDA also announced on Thursday the Academic All-District Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Track and Field Teams to which five Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) student-athletes were named.

Kleve, a criminology major, was named to the Verizon Academic All-America® College Division Second Team. She is the 10th IIAC student-athlete to earn Verizon Academic All-America® honors during the 2002-03 year.

Loras College’s Marcus Murphy (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny HS) and Wartburg College’s Brent Showalter (Wellman, Iowa/Mid-Prairie HS) were named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII Men’s Cross Country/Track and Field First Team and Buena Vista University’s Jessica Jensen (Elkhorn, Iowa/Elkhorn-Kimballton HS), Loras’ Rachel Hutchins (Bernard, Iowa/Cascade HS) and Wartburg’s Joe Hughes (Tama, Iowa/South Tama HS) were named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII Cross Country/Track and Field Second Team.

Murphy, a math major, and Showalter, a business administration major, are now placed on the Verizon Academic All-America® ballot. The Verizon Academic All-America® Men’s Cross Country/Track and Field Team will be announced on Tuesday, June 17.

Jensen and Hutchins are biology majors, and Hughes is a communications art major.

To be eligible for selection to the Verizon Academic All-District Team and the Verizon Academic All-America® Team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing, be a starter or key reserve and possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

District VII College Division includes NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA schools in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
