WAVERLY, IOWA . . . Simpson College
won its eighth Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) women’s
golf championship in the past 11 years led by individual medalist
Senta Willenborg (Dyersville, Iowa/Beckman HS)
who finished with a 173 (85-88). The Storm shot a 696 (358-338)
in the two-day tournament.
Including Willenborg’s first place finish, Simpson
had five golfers finish in the top-10. Amber DeRiemacker
(Atalissa, Iowa/West Liberty HS) finished second (92-82—174), Janelle
Claiborne (Lake City, Iowa/Southern Cal HS) finished fourth
(88-88—176), Karen Smith (Eagle Grove, Iowa/Eagle
Grove HS) finished seventh (93-85—178), and Steph Schenfeld
(Indianola, Iowa/Indianola HS) finished eighth (95-85—180). Keena
Heater (Morning Sun, Iowa/Wapello HS) just missed being
the Storms’ sixth golfer in the top-10. She lost a sudden death
playoff to Loras’ Megan Reiter (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa
HS) to finish 11th (97-86—183).
Willenborg is the third member of her family to
win the individual title following in the steps of her sisters,
Leah and Hannah. Leah was a three-time champion (1992-94) and Hannah
was a two-time champion (1996, 1999). The Championship is Simpson’s
first in any sport since 2000 when it won the men’s soccer title.
Host Wartburg College finished second with a 726,
its highest finish ever in the Conference Championship. Two-time
defending Champion, Buena Vista, and Loras finished tied for third
with 755 followed by Luther (760), Central (817), Cornell (840)
and Coe (868).
Loras’ Katrina Hammell (Caledonia,
Minn./Caledonia HS) and Wartburg’s Erin Dohlman (LeRoy,
Minn./LeRoy-Ostrander HS) finished third and fifth, respectively
to round-out the top-five. Dohlman beat teammate Amanda
McMahan (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk HS) in sudden death to crack
the top-five.

CLAIBORNE SELECTED MVP: Claiborne was
selected IIAC Most Valuable Player by the Conference coaches. She
was Simpson’s top finisher four times during the year and earned
All-Conference honors for the second consecutive year. She entered
the Conference tournament with an 82.4 stroke average and shot back-to-back
88 in the Conference Championship.
FRANZEN NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR:
Wartburg head coach Mark Franzen led the Knights
to their best finish ever in the Conference Championship and was
named IIAC Coach of the Year. During the 2002 season, Wartburg had
two second place finishes, two third place finishes and twice set
the school record for lowest round in school history under the direction
of the third-year head coach.
