SIMPSON WINS 2002 IIAC WOMEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP; STORM'S SENTA WILLENBORG INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST

October 5, 2002

WAVERLY, IOWA . . . Simpson College won its eighth Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) women’s golf championship in the past 11 years led by individual medalist Senta Willenborg (Dyersville, Iowa/Beckman HS) who finished with a 173 (85-88). The Storm shot a 696 (358-338) in the two-day tournament.

Including Willenborg’s first place finish, Simpson had five golfers finish in the top-10. Amber DeRiemacker (Atalissa, Iowa/West Liberty HS) finished second (92-82—174), Janelle Claiborne (Lake City, Iowa/Southern Cal HS) finished fourth (88-88—176), Karen Smith (Eagle Grove, Iowa/Eagle Grove HS) finished seventh (93-85—178), and Steph Schenfeld (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola HS) finished eighth (95-85—180). Keena Heater (Morning Sun, Iowa/Wapello HS) just missed being the Storms’ sixth golfer in the top-10. She lost a sudden death playoff to Loras’ Megan Reiter (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa HS) to finish 11th (97-86—183).

Willenborg is the third member of her family to win the individual title following in the steps of her sisters, Leah and Hannah. Leah was a three-time champion (1992-94) and Hannah was a two-time champion (1996, 1999). The Championship is Simpson’s first in any sport since 2000 when it won the men’s soccer title.

Host Wartburg College finished second with a 726, its highest finish ever in the Conference Championship. Two-time defending Champion, Buena Vista, and Loras finished tied for third with 755 followed by Luther (760), Central (817), Cornell (840) and Coe (868).

Loras’ Katrina Hammell (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia HS) and Wartburg’s Erin Dohlman (LeRoy, Minn./LeRoy-Ostrander HS) finished third and fifth, respectively to round-out the top-five. Dohlman beat teammate Amanda McMahan (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk HS) in sudden death to crack the top-five.
