MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The 2002
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Cross Country Championship
will be Saturday, November 2, at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
The 8,000-meter men’s race starts at 11:00 am, followed by the 5,000-meter
women’s race at noon. Junior varsity races will follow the varsity
races at 12:45 pm (men) and 1:30 pm (women).
The course is located on the campus of Luther College.
It is flat with the exception of one hill. The course is primarily
a grass surface on Luther’s running trail along the Upper Iowa River,
intramural fields and around Lindeman Pond. Maps of the courses

2001 Women’s Recap: Wartburg College ended Luther’s
two-year run as the Conference Champion with a 34-40 victory at
the 2001 Championship at the University of Dubuque. Central (93
points) and Loras (112 points) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Three Wartburg runners – Missy Buttry (second,
18:31), Erin Van Zee (fourth, 18:40) and Amie
Brunko (fifth, 18:45) – finished in the top-five as all
of the Knights’ scorers finished in the top-12. Luther’s Johanna
Olson won her third consecutive Conference individual title,
finishing in 17:52, 28 seconds off the Conference record she set
in 2000.
Seven of the 15 All-Conference runners from 2001
return to their team’s line-ups this year. Wartburg returns Buttry
and Gretchen Graham (12th, 19:29), Luther returns
Natalie Retrum (third, 18:36) and Colleen
Schmitt (14th, 19:32), Loras returns Amy Scheuerell
(sixth, 18:48) and Coe returns Tiffany Foster (10th,
19:23). Central’s Teresa Wauters (ninth, 19:20)
is questionable for the Championship after missing the last month
due to injury.
2001 Men’s Recap: Wartburg won its fourth consecutive
title, edging Luther 26-55. Loras finished third with 61 points
followed by Simpson with 120 points. Three Wartburg runners – Joe
Hughes (second, 26:04), Brock Lehman (third,
26:26) and Tyson Keith (fourth, 26:29) finished
in the top-five as all of the Knights’ scorers finished in the top-10.
Loras’ Marcus Murphy won his second straight individual
title in a Conference 8,000-meter record time of 25:24.
Seven of the 15 All-Conference runners from 2001
return to their team’s line-ups this year. Hughes and Keith return
for Wartburg, Murphy and Dan Lahart (13th, 27:19)
return for Loras, Luther returns Charlie Burnham
(fifth, 26:36) and Scott Striegel (14th, 27:19),
and Central returns Seth Comfort (15th, 27:20).
