IOWA CONFERENCE SOCCER TOURNAMENT BEGINS TUESDAY

November 4, 2002

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The 2002 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Men’s and Women’s Soccer Tournament begins on Tuesday, November 5, with three of the four first round contests. The first round, which includes two games on both the men’s and women’s side, is played at the higher seed. The semifinals and finals will be played at Wartburg College on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9.

Both women’s first round matches will be played at 2:00 pm on Tuesday. Third-seeded Loras College will host sixth-seeded University of Dubuque and fourth-seeded Cornell College hosts fifth-seeded Wartburg College. The women’s semifinal matches will be played at 1:00 pm on Friday in Waverly. Top-seeded Luther will play the Wartburg/Cornell winner and second-seeded Simpson will play the Dubuque/Loras winner. Saturday’s third-place and championship matches will be played at 1:00 pm.

On the men’s side, third-seeded Simpson College hosts sixth-seeded Cornell College at 5:00 pm on Tuesday. Fourth-seeded Loras hosts fifth-seeded Wartburg at 2:00 pm on Wednesday. The men’s semifinal matches will be played at 10:00 am on Friday in Waverly. Top-seeded Central College will play the Wartburg/Loras winner and second-seeded Luther College will play the Cornell/Simpson winner. Saturday’s third-place and championship matches will be played at 10:00 am.

2001 Championship: Loras became the fifth school in the six years of Iowa Conference women’s soccer to win the IIAC title. The third-seeded Duhawks defeated #4 Cornell, 2-1 in the finals after knocking off top-seeded Luther in the semifinals.

Luther won its fifth men’s soccer title in six years with a 2-1 overtime victory over Loras. The Norse advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament where they were eliminated by National runner-up University of Redlands (Calif.).
