TEN IOWA CONFERENCE STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT SOCCER TEAMS

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . Ten Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) soccer players were named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VII College Division Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Five women were selected, two on the First Team and three on the Second Team. Five men were selected to the 11-member Team.

Cornell College senior forward Megan Bachmann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Coronado HS), a Biochemistry (molecular biology) major, and Coe College senior defender Janice Frueh (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport North HS), a Chemistry/Physics/General Science major, were named to the 11-member First Team. Simpson College sophomore forward Erin Goettl (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), a Computer Science major, Luther College junior goaltender Michelle Edelmann (Pueblo, Colo./Central HS), a Biology/Psychology major and Simpson College senior goaltender Ashley Wilson (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes HS), a Physical Education major, were all named to the 12-member Second Team.

On the men’s side, all three midfielders selected to the Academic All-District VII Team represented the Iowa Conference – Coe College junior Kyle Fargen (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East HS), a Biology/Psychology major, Luther College junior Bryan Korth (Oregon, Wis./Oregon HS), a Chemistry/Psychology major, and Simpson College senior Ben Parrott (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown HS), a Spanish/Political Science major. Cornell College senior defender Matt Loptien (Littleton, Colo./Summit HS), a Biochemistry major, and Simpson College senior defender Brian Mann (Omaha, Neb./Millard South HS), a Math/Computer Science major, were also named to the Team.

The 11 members of the Verizon Academic All-District VII Women’s First Team and all 11 members of the Verizon Academic All-District VII Men’s Team will be placed on the national ballot. The Verizon Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Team will be announced on Monday, November 25. The Verizon Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Team will be announced on Tuesday, November 26.

To be eligible for selection to the Verizon Academic All-District Team and the Verizon Academic All-America® Team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing, be a starter or key reserve and possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

District VII College Division includes NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA schools in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
