WAVERLY, IOWA . . . Sophomore
forward Jordan Hartman dropped in two goals, leading Luther to its
second consecutive Iowa Conference men’s soccer title with a 2-0
win over upstart Wartburg in the Conference tournament title tilt
Saturday, Nov. 9, at Knights Soccer Complex in Waverly. Loras’ women
also gained their second straight league title on the heels of a
2-1 win over Cornell on freshman forward Melissa Donile’s goal in
the third minute of overtime.
Hartman’s two goals came within three minutes of
each other from the 67-70th minute of the second half. The Knights,
ending a school record-setting campaign at 11-9-1, were out-shot
20-11 by the 17-2-1 Norse men but sophomore goalkeeper Collin Lane
kept it close with four saves. Senior goalkeeper Rick Isaacson took
the win for Luther, leading them to their sixth conference championship
in seven seasons, and gained two saves.
Junior forward Becky Duffy of Loras and senior
midfielder Katie Boyle of Cornell traded goals in the second half
to set up the women’s extra session. Loras out-shot Cornell 19-5
but Boyle and teammate Carolyn Lee turned in seven saves for the
Rams’ defense. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hall claimed the decision
in goal with one save.
In third-place matches, Simpson defeated Central’s
men 2-1, while Luther and the Storm women battled to a 1-1, double-overtime
tie.
