CORNELL'S BOYLE NAMED WOMEN'S SOCCER MVP; CORNELL'S STEVE AND MIKE ROBERTSON NAMED COACHES OF THE YEAR

November 13, 2002

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Cornell College goaltender Katie Boyle (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS) has been named the 2002 Women’s Soccer Most Valuable Player and Cornell’s co-Head Coaches Steve and Mike Robertson have been selected 2002 Women’s Soccer Coaches of the Year.

Boyle posted a 13-6-1 record, a 1.08 goals against average, and eight shutouts in her first full season in goal. Against Iowa Conference opponents, she posted a 6-2-1 record with an .897 save percentage and six shutouts. She led the Conference with a 0.64 GAA, was tied for first in shutouts and finished seventh in saves per game (5.78). Following a four-game losing streak in mid-September, Cornell rebounded to win 10 of its final 12 games (10-1-1) including an eight-game winning streak (five against Conference opponents). During that streak, Boyle surrendered just three goals, posted six straight shutouts and held opponents scoreless for 609 straight minutes.

In the Conference Tournament, Boyle led the fourth-seeded Rams to the Championship match before falling in overtime to Loras. Boyle, a four-time All-Conference selection including three times as a forward, scored the game-tying goal to forced overtime in the Championship match. It was her second goal of the season. She led Cornell to an overtime victory over top-seeded Luther in the semifinals, surrendering just one goal in 99:45.

Mike and Steve Robertson completed their ninth season as co-head coaches at Cornell, leading the Rams to a 13-6-1 record and an appearance in their second straight Iowa Conference Championship match. The 13 wins are the second most in school history (15 in 1998). Under the Robertsons, who were also IIAC Coaches of the Year in 1997, Cornell has a 79-81-3 overall record.

The IIAC also announced today the Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team. The 26-member team includes 13 First Team players and 13 Second Team players. IIAC Runner-up Cornell has a Conference-high six players on the All-Conference Team including three on the First Team. Conference Champion Loras has five All-Conference players including four on the First Team. Luther and Simpson each have four All-Conference players, two on the First Team and two on the Second Team.
