TWO NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® FOOTBALL TEAM

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University offensive lineman David Laudner (Rockwell, Iowa/Rockwell-Swaledale HS) and Wartburg College defensive back Garrett Rettig (Tripoli, Iowa/Tripoli HS) have been named to the Verizon Academic All-America® Football Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Monday. Both Laudner and Rettig were named to the 23-member Second Team.

Laudner and Rettig are the sixth and seventh Iowa Conference Verizon Academic All-American’s® from the fall 2002 season. Last week, Cornell College defender Matt Loptien (Littleton, Colo./Summit HS) and Simpson College defender Brian Mann (Omaha, Neb./Millard South HS) were named to the Verizon Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Second Team. Luther College midfielder Bryan Korth (Oregon, Wis./Oregon HS) and Coe College midfielder Kyle Fargen (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East HS) were named to the Verizon Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Third Team. Coe College defender Janice Frueh (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport North HS) was named to the Verizon Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Second Team.

To be eligible for the Verizon Academic All-America® Team, an individual must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings, be a starter or key reserve, possess as 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and must have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District First Team.
