MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Coe College running back Fredrick Jackson (Fort
Worth, Texas/Lamar HS) and Central College linebacker Austin
Bonnema (Pella, Iowa/Pella HS) have been selected by the
American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) to play in the 2002
Aztec Bowl on December 14, in Torreon, Mexico. The United States
team, that will play Mexico at noon CT, will be coached by former
Central College head coach, Ron Schipper.
Jackson is a two-time Iowa Conference Most Valuable
Player and a three-time All-Conference selection. Bonnema is a two-time
All-Conference selection.
The Aztec Bowl is the traditional season-ending
game for Mexico’s college football season. The game has been played
30 times since 1947 with the last five contests featuring the United
States-Mexico match-up. Mexico faced a mixture of NCAA and NAIA
colleges, junior colleges, armed forces teams and international
teams in the 26 Aztec Bowls prior to 1997. Last season, the United
States Division III all-stars posted a 37-5 victory led by former
Buena Vista University kicker Carlos Martinez,
who earned USA MVP honors.
The 42-man USA roster is made up each year of seniors
from Division III schools around the country. Seniors named to the
AFCA Division III Coaches’ All-America Team receive invitations
first and the remainder of the roster is filled in based on recommendations
from Division III head coaches around the country. To make the team
as representative as possible, no more than one player is chosen
from any school.
Complete coverage of the Aztec Bowl including full
rosters, broadcast information and historical information can be
found at the AFCA website.
