WARTBURG WINS 12th STRAIGHT IIAC WRESTLING TITLE; SIMPSON'S BREWER NAMED OUTSTANDING WRESTLER; LUTHER'S MITCHELL NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . Wartburg College won its 12th straight Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) wrestling Championship on Thursday at Cornell College behind the performances of eight individual champions and one runner-up. The Knights’ amassed 206.5 points defeating runner-up Luther College by 54 points. Simpson (144 points), Coe (114 points) and Buena Vista (108 points) rounded out the top-five.

Simpson sophomore Dustin Brewer was named the Dick Walker Outstanding Wrestler. As the second-seed at 125-pounds, Brewer pinned the top-seed Justin McClintock of Wartburg at 3:47 in the Championship match. Brewer entered the Conference meet ranked seventh nationally, McClintock was ranked fourth. Brewer also pinned Central’s Adam Ohnemus (0:22) and defeated Coe’s Sean Pearl by technical fall (16-0, 4:09).

Other individual champions include Wartburg’s Ozzie Saxon (133-pounds), Wartburg’s Dustin Hinschberger (141-pounds), Wartburg’s Bart Mehlert (149-pounds), Wartburg’s Cory Connell (157-pounds), Luther's Garrett South (165-pounds), Wartburg’s Mark Sturm (174-pounds), Wartburg’s Ryan Sturm (184-pounds), Wartburg’s Akeem Carter (197-pounds) and Wartburg’s Blake Gillis (heavyweight).

Luther College head coach Dave Mitchell was named IIAC Coach of the Year for the second time in three years. Mitchell led the Norse to a second place finish at the Championship and guided seven national qualifiers. During the dual season, Luther finished with an 18-4 overall record including a 7-1 mark in the IIAC.

Thirty-two wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships to be held March 5-6, at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa. IIAC member Loras College is the host. The winner and runner-up in each of the ten weight classes along with 12 wildcards will represent the Conference at the National Championships. All 10 of Wartburg’s wrestlers will be joined by seven wrestlers from Luther, five from Simpson, four from Loras, three from Buena Vista, two from Coe and one from Central. The Iowa Conference national qualifiers are:
