MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . Wartburg
College repeated as the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s
(IIAC) men’s and women’s indoor track and field Championship hosted
by Cornell College. The Knights scored 219 points on the women’s
side to defeat second-place Loras by 79.5 points. The men scored
200.5 points, defeating Loras by 36.5 points.
Rounding out the women’s top-five were Central
(105.5), Luther (89.5) and Coe (77). Rounding out the men’s top-five
were Central (153), Dubuque (51) and Luther (51).
Loras senior Rachel Hutchins (Bernard,
Iowa/Cascade HS) and junior Dan Winder (Waterloo,
Iowa/West HS) were named the women’s and men’s Most Valuable Performers.
Hutchins finished in the top-five of four events including a first-place
finish in the 55-meter hurdles (8.39 seconds). She also placed third
in the 400-meter dash (59.71), fourth in the long jump (17-3.25)
and fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.72).
Winder won the 1500-meter (4:03.08) and 3000-meter
(8:31.2) runs. He won the 3000-meters by nearly six seconds and
shaved over nearly seven seconds off the Conference record set last
year.
Wartburg’s Marcus Newsom was named
IIAC Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year and Loras’ Desiree
Orwig-Gremmel was named IIAC Men’s Track and Field Coach
of the Year.
In the second year of the Iowa Conference Indoor
Track and Field Championship, 18 records were set including the
men’s and women’s shot put, women’s pole vault, women’s weight throw,
women’s triple jump, men’s and women’s high jump, men’s 5000-meter
run, men’s 55-meter hurdles, men’s 55-meter dash, men’s and women’s
distance medley relay, women’s 400-meter dash, women’s 600-meter
dash, men’s 1000-meter run, men’s 200-meter dash, men’s 3000-meter
run, and women’s 4x400 relay.
