14 WRESTLERS, THREE TEAMS RECOGNIZED
BY NWCA FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Fourteen Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) wrestlers and three IIAC wrestling teams were recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) for their academic excellence by earning NWCA Scholar All-American and NWCA Scholar Team Award honors announced in conjunction with the Division III National Championships in Dubuque this past weekend.

To be eligible for NWCA Scholar All-American honors, the student-athlete must have a 3.2 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for the previous, full academic year and must have placed at the national qualifying tournament (at least fourth if the national qualifying tournament is a Conference tournament, or at least sixth for the NECCWA and IIAC or if the national qualifying tournament is a regional tournament). If the student-athlete did not qualify for the National meet, he must have competed in two-thirds of the school’s total scheduled NCAA sanctioned events and won at least 67 percent of his matches.

The NWCA recognized the top-20 teams with cumulative grade point averages above 3.0. Buena Vista University was 13th with a cumulative GPA of 3.219, Central College ranked 17th with a cumulative GPA of 3.175 and Luther College ranked 19th with a 3.095 cumulative GPA.

To be eligible for the NWCA Scholar Team Award, at least six of the 10-team members had to compete in the national qualifying tournament. Up to four members used who did not participate at the qualifying tournament were required to compete in at least half of the team’s competitions for the 2003-04 season.
