May 18, 2004

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced today that Wartburg College has won the IIAC All-Sports Championship Trophy for the second consecutive year. Wartburg also won its seventh straight Elmer Hertel Men’s Sports Championship Trophy while Central College won the Marjorie Giles Women’s Sports Championship Trophy for the first time since 2000-01.

The IIAC All-Sports Championship Trophy is determined by the school’s finish in the Giles and Hertel Trophy standings. In addition to finishing first in the Hertel Trophy, Wartburg finished second in the Giles Trophy standings for a total of 17 points. Central, Luther and Simpson all finished tied for second in the IIAC All-Sports Championship Trophy standings with 14 points.

Wartburg won the Hertel Men’s Sports Championship Trophy with 68.2 points behind Conference Championships in cross country (sixth straight), football, wrestling (12th straight), indoor track (second straight), golf and baseball (eighth straight). The Knights finished 18.3 points ahead of second-place Simpson (49.9 points) and 20.55 points ahead of third-place Luther (47.65). Wartburg has now won 10 Hertel Men’s Sports Championship Trophies, second most of any Conference school (Central-15), and its seven straight are the most consecutive won by any school.

Central edged Wartburg by one-half point for the Giles Women’s Sports Championship Trophy. The Dutch, behind Conference titles in volleyball (eighth straight) and softball (third straight) along with a second-place finish in tennis, amassed 51 points. Luther finished third with 49.5 points followed by Simpson with 47.8 points.
