FOUR NATIONAL CHAMPIONS; 38 ALL-AMERICAN HONORS AT NCAA OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

DECATUR, ILL. . . . Four Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) athletes won National Championships and 38 All-American honors were earned at the NCAA National outdoor track and field Championships on May 27-29, hosted by Millikin University.

Wartburg seniors Dia Dohlman and Missy Buttry won their second career National titles in the javelin and 5000-meter run, respectively. Dohlman, who also finished first in the even in 2001, earned All-American honors in the event for the fourth time with a winning throw of 152-5. Buttry defended her 5000-meter title, finishing in 15:57.86, 1:04.31 ahead of the second place finisher. Central senior Raegan Schultz earned All-American honors in the heptathlon for the third straight year with an NCAA Division III Championship record 4,943 points. Schultz, the national runner-up in 2003 and finished third in 2002, finished 108 points ahead of the second-place finisher – her twin sister Lindsay.

On the men’s side, Wartburg sophomore Josh Moen won the National Championship in the 5000-meter run in a time of 14:40.11, finishing 1.19 seconds ahead of Conference-foe Marcus Murphy of Loras. It is the second straight year Moen and Murphy finished right after the other in the National Championships. Last year, Moen finished third in the 5000-meter run and Murphy finished fourth.

Team Performances: In the women’s team race, Wartburg’s fourth-place finish is the highest in school history and its fourth straight top-10 national finish. The Knights scored 35 points. Loras finished 12th with 25 points, Central finished 14th with 20 points and Luther tied for 70th with one point.

On the men’s side, Wartburg was the highest of six IIAC finishers with a tie for 14th-place finish (15 points). Loras tied for 27th with 10 points, Luther tied for 36th place with eight points, Dubuque tied for 46th with six points, Central tied for 51st with five points and Cornell tied for 65th with two points.
