CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Six Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) golfers were recently
recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) as
the GCAA announced the PING All-America Team and the Cleveland Golf
All-America Scholars.
Central College senior Patrick McElyea
(Elmhurst, Ill./Timothy Christian HS) was named to the
GCAA PING All-America Third Team. McElyea finished tied for 15th
at the 2004 NCAA Championship with a nine-over-par 297. He was the
top Iowa Conference finisher.
Loras College junior Pete Weber (Peosta,
Iowa/Western Dubuque HS) was a GCAA PING All-America honorable mention.
Weber qualified as an individual for the 2004 NCAA Championships
and shot a 323 (+35).
McElyea was one of three Central golfers and four
Iowa Conference golfers to earn Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar
honors. Junior Nick Grossman (Carroll, Iowa/Kuemper
HS) and senior Kyle Matzen (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola
HS) along with Wartburg senior Dan Schmitz (Stout,
Iowa/Dike-New Hartford HS) were also recognized for combining academic
and athletic excellence.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar
recognition, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically
and competed in at least two years of golf at the collegiate level,
participate in 70 percent of his teams competitive rounds, have
a stroke average under 79.0 and maintain a cumulative grade point
average of 3.0. McElyea, Grossman, Matzen and Schmitz were among
41 Division III All-America Scholars.
