BUENA VISTA WINS WOMEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP IN PLAYOFF; BUENA VISTA’S JEN EINCK CONFERENCE MEDALIST & MVP; BVU’S BOHNENKAMP AND SIMPSON’S DARRAH CO-COACHES OF THE YEAR

October 4, 2003

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA . . . Seventy-two holes were not enough to determine the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) women’s golf Champion. Buena Vista University and Simpson College tied with a 1355 before Buena Vista won on the first hole of the sudden death playoff. Simpson shot a school record 307 in the final round to Buena Vista’s 310 to make-up the three strokes it trailed after three rounds and force the playoff. It is the Beavers’ third Conference title in the last four years.

Individually, Buena Vista’s Jen Einck (Primghar, Iowa/South O’Brien HS) earned Conference Medalist honors and was named IIAC Most Valuable Performer with a four-round score of 328, including a final round 77. Einck was also the Conference medalist as a freshman in 2000. She finished second in 2001 and ninth last season.

Loras senior Katrina Hammell (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia HS) finished two strokes back at 330 with a 78 on Saturday followed by Simpson sophomore Steph Schenfeld (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola HS) who finished third with a 332.

Buena Vista’s Hall and Cortney Stork (Breda, Iowa/Carroll Kuemper HS), and Wartburg’s Erin Dohlman (LeRoy, Minn./LeRoy-Ostander HS) all finished with a 339. Hall birdied the second playoff hole (502-yard par five), Dohlman parred the hole and Stork double boggied.

Rounding out the top-10, which are designated All-Conference players were: Simpson’s Senta Willenborg (Dyersville, Iowa/Beckman HS) – seventh with a 340; Cornell’s Krystal Kirkpatrick (Humboldt, Iowa/Humboldt HS) – eighth with a 342; DeRiemacker – ninth with a 347; and Wartburg’s Amy McMahan (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk HS) – 10th with a 351.

Co-Coaches of the Year: Buena Vista head coach Tom Bohnenkamp and Simpson head coach Bob Darrah were voted Conference co-Coaches of the Year by their peers. Darrah received the honor for ninth time since 1990. Bohnenkamp was also selected IIAC Coach of the Year following the 2001 season.

In addition to its performance at the Conference Championship, Bohnenkamp led the Beavers to six top-three finishes in seven tournaments including titles at the Northwestern (Iowa) Invitational, Morningside Invitational and Luther Invitational. The Beavers also finished second at the BVU Beaver Classic and the Wartburg Invitational.

Darrah led the Storm to top-four finishes in each of the six tournaments it played including titles at the Mount Mercy Cropper Invitational, Coe Invitational and Loras Invitational. The Storm finished second at the Luther Invitational.
