CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Luther
College won its 21st Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC)
women’s tennis title in the 22 years of the Championship with a
6-2 victory over Central College in the Championship Match on Saturday
at Veterans Park Tennis Courts.
Luther, the Tournament’s top seed, took two of
three doubles matches including #1 Miriam Blom-Skrade/Lindsay Hagen
and #2 Kirsten Madsen/Tara Huinker. Blom-Skrade (#1), Huinker (#4),
Jacie Haroldson (#5) and Tasha Allemang (#6) recorded singles victories
for the Norse. Central, the Tournament’s third seed, received victories
from its #3 doubles team of Ellen Gallinger/Kristin Kovar and from
Kovar at #3 singles. The #2 singles match between Hagen and Tracy
Stursma was not finished.
Luther defeated Buena Vista (6-0) and Coe (5-0)
to advance to the finals. Central defeated Simpson (7-0) and upset
the #2 seed Cornell (5-1) en route to the finals.
In other matches on Saturday, Cornell defeated
Coe (5-0) in the third place match, Loras defeated Simpson (5-2)
in the fifth place match and Wartburg defeated Buena Vista (6-2)
in the seventh place match.

Cornell’s Schutte Named MVP: Cornell
College sophomore Marie Schutte (Boone, Iowa/Boone HS) was named
the IIAC Most Valuable Player. Schutte completed the season with
an 11-2 singles record and a 12-8 doubles record. Against Iowa Conference
opponents, she posted a 7-0 singles record and 4-2 doubles record.
Schutte is the fourth straight IIAC women’s tennis MVP from Cornell
joining two-time winner Lindsey Pfalmer (2000, 2002) and Sarah Leavenworth
(2001).

Central’s Stursma Named Coach of the
Year: Central College head coach Doug Stursma was
named IIAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his 11-year
career. Stursma led the Dutch to a 13-2 overall record this season
and a 5-1 record in IIAC dual matches. The second place finish in
the Conference Tournament is the Dutch’s highest during his tenure.
