March 2, 2005

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University junior guard Katie Maguire (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor) was named 2004-05 IIAC Women’s Basketball Most Valuable Player and Buena Vista head coach Janet Berry was named 2004-05 IIAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

Maguire, a three-time All-Conference selection, is the third straight Conference MVP from Buena Vista following two-time MVP Amy Meggers. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Maguire is the Conference leader in five statistical categories and ranks in the top-10 of eight categories. In 26 games, she is averaging a Conference-high 18.3 points, 3.0 steals, and 2.77 three-point field goals per game, shooting a Conference-best 45.9 percent from behind the three-point arc (72-of-157) and has a 1.65 assist-to-turnover ratio. She is second in the Conference in free throw percentage (82.7 percent), second in assists (5.08/game) and eighth in field goal percentage (47.9 percent).

Maguire became the 12th player at Buena Vista to score 1,000 career points, a mark she reached against Central on February 5. She has ranked among the national leaders in scoring, assists, free throw percentage and three-point shooting (percentage and 3-pt FGM/game) throughout the season.

In 16 Conference games, Maguire ranked first in scoring (17.9 points/game), three-point field goal percentage (48.4 percent) and three-point field goals made (2.75/game). She was second in assists (4.94/game), steals (2.94/game) and free throw percentage (85.1 percent). She ranked third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.65) and sixth in field goal percentage (48.9 percent).

Berry was chosen Coach of the Year for the second straight season and fifth time in her 13 years as head coach at Buena Vista. The Beavers enter the NCAA Tournament with a 25-2 overall record and posted a 16-0 mark in the Conference, becoming the first Iowa Conference women’s team to go unbeaten in Conference-play since Simpson went 20-0 in 1998-99. Berry registered her 200th career coaching victory on January 14, against Dubuque. The regular season title is Buena Vista’s fifth since 1992-93, the most of any Conference school in that span.

The IIAC also announced today the 2004-05 women’s basketball All-Conference Team. The 15-member Team includes five repeat All-Conference performers including MVP Maguire, a three-time All-Conference selection. Conference Champion Buena Vista had three players earn All-Conference honors including the MVP and two First Team members. Coe, Luther, Simpson and Wartburg each had two All-Conference selections.
