CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Buena Vista University junior guard Katie Maguire (Treynor,
Iowa/Treynor) was named 2004-05 IIAC Women’s Basketball Most Valuable
Player and Buena Vista head coach Janet Berry was
named 2004-05 IIAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.
Maguire, a three-time All-Conference selection,
is the third straight Conference MVP from Buena Vista following
two-time MVP Amy Meggers. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Maguire
is the Conference leader in five statistical categories and ranks
in the top-10 of eight categories. In 26 games, she is averaging
a Conference-high 18.3 points, 3.0 steals, and 2.77 three-point
field goals per game, shooting a Conference-best 45.9 percent from
behind the three-point arc (72-of-157) and has a 1.65 assist-to-turnover
ratio. She is second in the Conference in free throw percentage
(82.7 percent), second in assists (5.08/game) and eighth in field
goal percentage (47.9 percent).
Maguire became the 12th player at Buena Vista to
score 1,000 career points, a mark she reached against Central on
February 5. She has ranked among the national leaders in scoring,
assists, free throw percentage and three-point shooting (percentage
and 3-pt FGM/game) throughout the season.
In 16 Conference games, Maguire ranked first in
scoring (17.9 points/game), three-point field goal percentage (48.4
percent) and three-point field goals made (2.75/game). She was second
in assists (4.94/game), steals (2.94/game) and free throw percentage
(85.1 percent). She ranked third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.65)
and sixth in field goal percentage (48.9 percent).
Berry was chosen Coach of the Year for the second
straight season and fifth time in her 13 years as head coach at
Buena Vista. The Beavers enter the NCAA Tournament with a 25-2 overall
record and posted a 16-0 mark in the Conference, becoming the first
Iowa Conference women’s team to go unbeaten in Conference-play since
Simpson went 20-0 in 1998-99. Berry registered her 200th career
coaching victory on January 14, against Dubuque. The regular season
title is Buena Vista’s fifth since 1992-93, the most of any Conference
school in that span.
The IIAC also announced today the 2004-05 women’s
basketball All-Conference Team. The 15-member Team includes five
repeat All-Conference performers including MVP Maguire, a three-time
All-Conference selection. Conference Champion Buena Vista had three
players earn All-Conference honors including the MVP and two First
Team members. Coe, Luther, Simpson and Wartburg each had two All-Conference
selections.
