IOWA CITY, IOWA . . . Behind its
first Conference medalist since 1998, Loras College won its first
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) men’s golf Championship
in over 50 years. Senior Pete Weber took home the Conference Medalist
and Most Valuable Player honors with an Iowa Conference 72-hole
Championship record score of two-under-par 286, 11 strokes ahead
of Simpson’s Mike Martin.
The title is Loras’ fourth overall and first since
1954. The Duhawks shot a final round 306 at Finkibine Golf Course
on Saturday for a 72-hole score of 1206, 11 shots better than runner-up
and defending Champion Wartburg. Central finished third with a 1220
followed by Luther (1233) and Simpson (1254).
Weber, the first Duhawk golfer to win an individual
Conference title since Tim Davis in 1998, went to the top of the
leaderboard after shooting a second round 69 to take a three stroke
lead. He extended his lead to six strokes after the third round
before shooting a 73 in Saturday’s final round for the winning 11-stroke
margin.
Rounding out the top-10, which are designated All-Conference
players were: Central’s Nick Grossman (298, 3rd); Wartburg’s Alan
Johnson (301, 4th); Loras’ Adam Luehmann (304, 5th after winning
playoff); Wartburg’s Kevin Ault (304, 6th after losing playoff);
Central’s Jake Pearson (304, 7th after winning playoff); Luther’s
Mike Eisele (304, 8th losing playoff); Central’s Brett Meyer (306,
9th); and Buena Vista’s Alex Downing (307, 10th after winning playoff).
Coach of the Year: Loras
head coach Denise Udelhofen became the first Duhawk men’s golf coach
to be named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year. She led Loras to
the team title posting an 11 stroke improvement from its 1217 third-place
Championship finish a year ago.
