DUBUQUE, IOWA . . . Shauna
Green has been elevated from her role as assistant to head women’s
basketball coach at Loras College. Director of Athletics Chad Walthall
informed the Loras community of the decision earlier today.
Green, who has spent the last three seasons as
the Duhawks’ assistant coach, replaces Larry Lawler, who resigned
following the completion of the 2004-05 campaign. Green served as
Lawler’s assistant for each of his three seasons leading the Loras
program. In addition to serving as assistant basketball coach, Green
worked as an admissions counselor for the school the past two years.
“I was impressed by the passion Shauna showed in
pursuit of this position,” Walthall said. “Clearly, she has shown
that she is prepared to meet the demands of being a head coach.
Her existing relationship with the players and knowledge of the
recruiting and admission process at Loras will help make this transition
a smooth one for everyone involved in the program.”
Green inherits a program that has compiled a 50-32
overall record during her three seasons as assistant coach, including
a school-record 22 victories in 2002-03. That season, the Duhawks
won their first Iowa Conference title and earned a berth in the
NCAA III National Tournament. Loras completed the 2004-05 campaign
with a 13-13 record and returns all but three players from its roster.
“I want to thank Chad Walthall and the Loras administration
for this opportunity.” Green said. “We have shown in the past three
seasons that a winning tradition is possible for the women’s basketball
program at Loras. I look forward to building on that tradition.”
The Clinton, Iowa native came to Loras after graduating
from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. in 2002. She earned her degree
in business marketing while finishing a playing career as one of
the most decorated female athletes in Golden Griffin history. A
four-time all-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference selection and three-time
Canisius most valuable player, she is the all-time leading scorer
(2,012 points) and second-leading rebounder (910 rebounds) in school
history. She was just as successful in the classroom earning conference
and district all-academic honors as well.
Green is scheduled to complete her master’s degree
from Loras in athletics administration later this month. She and
her husband, Andy, reside in East Dubuque, Ill.
