JUNE RECAP OF NATIONAL AWARDS AND HONORS

June 28, 2005

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Academic and athletic awards and honors continued for Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) student-athletes and institutions during the month of June. The following awards and honors were announced during the month.

FOUR FINISH IN TOP-100 OF DIRECTORS’ CUP – Four Iowa Conference schools were among the top-100 in the final United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup standings. Wartburg finished 12th, the highest among IIAC schools and its fifth straight top-15 finish. Points are awarded based on each institution’s national championship finish in men’s and women’s sports. The Knights totaled 553.5 points. Loras finished 61st with 229.25 points, Luther finished 65th with 216.25 points and Central finished tied for 96th with 164 points. Williams (Mass.) College won its ninth Directors’ Cup in the last 10 years.

HAPANIONEK AND SCHERBRING NAMED ABCA ALL-AMERICANS – Dubuque senior first baseman Joe Hapanionek (Hanover Park, Ill./Hanover Park) and Wartburg senior pitcher Matt Scherbring (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware) were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-America Third Team. Hapanionek is just the second Dubuque baseball All-American, joining Fred Van Iten who earned All-America honors in 1965. Scherbring is the fifth different Wartburg player to earn baseball All-American honors.

SOUTH AND FORD NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® AT-LARGE TEAM – Luther senior wrestler Garrett South (Cumberland, Iowa/C&M) and Central junior tennis player Jason Ford (Granite Falls, Minn./Yellow Medicine East) were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® At-Large Team. South was a First Team selection and Ford was a Third Team selection.

ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC TRACK & FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY HONORS – Dubuque senior Basil Steele (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) and Cornell senior Anna Doherty (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Track & Field/Cross Country Teams. Steele was a First Team selection and Doherty was a Second Team selection.

Steele, Doherty and Coe junior Kit Wobeter (Toledo, Iowa/South Tama) were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Track & Field/Cross Country First Team. Buena Vista senior Melissa Riddle (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek) and Simpson junior Jen Wendt (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) were named to the Academic All-District Second Team.
