CEDAR FALLS, IOWA . . . Wartburg
College sophomore Andrea Schiltz carded an even-par-72
to take the first-round lead at the 2004 Iowa Conference Women’s
Golf Championships Friday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar
Falls. Schiltz holds a four-stroke lead over Jennifer Stork of Buena
Vista and Lindy Buck of Luther, who both shot 76. Wartburg leads
the eight-team tournament by eight strokes over second-place Simpson
College.
Schiltz carded two birdies and eagled the par-five
14th hole to go two-under-par. Her double-bogey at the 18th-hole
dropped her to even-par for the tournament.
Janelle Claiborne of Simpson (77)
and Erin Dohlman of Wartburg (79) round out the
top-five individuals.
Buena Vista University, who has won three of the
past four championships, is third in the team standings with a team
score of 330. Central College (341) is fourth and Luther College
(342) is fifth.
Notes:
• The second round of the championship will be played tomorrow at
Pheasant Ridge. Rounds three and four will take place Oct. 8-9 at
Ellis Park Golf Course in Cedar Rapids.
• The top returning finisher from last year’s tournament,
Simpson’s Steph Schenfeld (third place), is tied
for seventh place after an opening round of 82.
• Coe golfer Jacqueline Bruso set
a new school record with a 10-over-par 82.
• The weather for today’s round featured strong
winds and at times, heavy rain.
