DECORAH, IOWA . . . After the
first day of the singles play, Luther College has advanced 5 players
to the championship match. Cornell is next with three, Central with
two and Loras and Wartburg both with one. Play will resume on Saturday
at 9:00 a.m. beginning with the completion of the singles competition.
At # 1 singles, the top two seeds will face each
other for the 2004 championship. Cornell's Marie Schutte, the #1
seed, reached the championship match after defeating #4 Ashley Peterson
of Coe (6-2, 6-2). Luther's Annalise Conaway, the #2 seed, defeated
Tracy Van Zante of Central 7-5, 6-1.
At #2 singles, Central's Kristin Kovar and Loras'
Natalia Fernandez will square off for the 2004 title. Both players
defeated the top seeds of the tournament to advance to the finals.
Kovar defeated the #1 seed, Kirsten Madsen of Luther (4-6, 6-2,
(10-5). Fernandez defeated the #2 seed, Emily Loewen of Cornell
in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
At #3 singles, the top two seeds advanced to the
finals. The #1 seed, Tasha Allemang of Luther, defeated Lindsey
Yuska of Central (6-4, 6-2). The #2 seed, Jenna Morris of Cornell,
defeated Nora Lawrenson of Loras (6-1, 6-4).
At #4 singles, Luther's Molly Beyer and Central's
Katie Moklestad will square off in the championship match. Beyer,
the #1 seed, defeated Stacey Barth of Cornell (6-3, 6-1). Moklestad,
seeded #3, defeated the #2 seed Martha Davis of Simpson (6-2, 6-4).
At #5 singles, it will be another Luther versus
Cornell showdown. The #1 seed Tara Huinker of Luther, advanced to
the championship tilt with a (6-3, 6-1) victory over Central's Jennifer
Knobbe. Jessica Horn, seeded #3, defeated the #2 seed Kara Klein
of Coe (6-4, 2-6, (10-5).
At #6 singles, #1 seed Jacie Haroldson of Luther
will face the #3 seed Kelli Mullen of Wartburg College. Haroldson
defeated Whitney Visser of Central (6-0, 6-1) to advance to the
finals. Mullen defeated the #2 seed, Brit Roth of Cornell (6-3,
6-2).
