CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Simpson senior golfer Janelle Claiborne defeated Wartburg’s Andrea Schiltz on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to capture the 2004 Iowa Conference Women’s Golf Championships Sunday at Ellis Park Golf Course in Cedar Rapids. In addition, Claiborne was named Iowa Conference Most Valuable Player after posting a four-day total of 315 (77-78-80-80) to win. Claiborne also garnered MVP honors in 2002.

Wartburg posted its best team score of the tournament to secure its first-ever Iowa Conference Team Title. Erin Dohlman shot a fourth round low score of 73 to lead the Knights to a 317. Dohlman placed third overall with a four-day total of 316. Wartburg finished with a team score of 1,290 (320-323-330-317) and placed four golfers in the top-10.

Simpson, who trailed by 10 strokes entering today’s round, posted its highest round of the tournament (337) and finished second overall with a score of 1,320 (328-323-332-337). Buena Vista finished third with a score of 1,330 (330-329-326-345). It was the first time in 13 years that someone other than Simpson or Buena Vista captured the conference crown.

Luther Head Coach Jason Berg was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year after leading his team to a fifth place finish at this year’s championships. As a team, the Norse shot 56 strokes lower than in 2003 and averaged eight strokes better per round at the tournament than it had during the regular season.

Buena Vista’s Jennifer Stork and Luther’s Lindy Buck rounded out the top-five individual scores. Stork finished three strokes back in fourth place with a score of 318. Buck finished fifth with a score of 321.

The top-10 individuals were named to the all-Iowa Conference team.
