CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Simpson
senior golfer Janelle Claiborne defeated Wartburg’s Andrea Schiltz
on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to capture the 2004
Iowa Conference Women’s Golf Championships Sunday at Ellis Park
Golf Course in Cedar Rapids. In addition, Claiborne was named Iowa
Conference Most Valuable Player after posting a four-day total of
315 (77-78-80-80) to win. Claiborne also garnered MVP honors in
2002.
Wartburg posted its best team score of the tournament
to secure its first-ever Iowa Conference Team Title. Erin Dohlman
shot a fourth round low score of 73 to lead the Knights to a 317.
Dohlman placed third overall with a four-day total of 316. Wartburg
finished with a team score of 1,290 (320-323-330-317) and placed
four golfers in the top-10.
Simpson, who trailed by 10 strokes entering today’s
round, posted its highest round of the tournament (337) and finished
second overall with a score of 1,320 (328-323-332-337). Buena Vista
finished third with a score of 1,330 (330-329-326-345). It was the
first time in 13 years that someone other than Simpson or Buena
Vista captured the conference crown.
Luther Head Coach Jason Berg was named Iowa Conference
Coach of the Year after leading his team to a fifth place finish
at this year’s championships. As a team, the Norse shot 56 strokes
lower than in 2003 and averaged eight strokes better per round at
the tournament than it had during the regular season.
Buena Vista’s Jennifer Stork and Luther’s Lindy
Buck rounded out the top-five individual scores. Stork finished
three strokes back in fourth place with a score of 318. Buck finished
fifth with a score of 321.
The top-10 individuals were named to the all-Iowa
Conference team.
