DECORAH, IOWA . . . Six Iowa Conference
singles champions have been crowned. Luther, who had five players
in the finals, captured titles at #3 through #6. Simpson's Kristin
Kovar captured the #2 singles title, while Cornell's Marie Schutte
was crowned the #1 singles champion.
Schutte, the #1 seed in the first flight, defeated
Luther's Annalise Conaway, the #2 seed, in straight sets (6-4, 6-2).
Schutte, who posted three wins en route to the 2004 title, raised
her season record to 12-2, 9-0 against Iowa Conference opponents.
Conaway completed the singles portion of the tournament with a record
of 11-4, 6-2 in the Iowa Conference.
At #2 singles, Central's Kristin Kovar, who entered
the tournament seeded #4, posted an imporessive (6-0, 6-0) straight
set victory over Natalia Fernandez of Loras. Kovar is now 9-3 overall,
6-1 in the IIAC. Fernandez is now 8-2, 6-3.
At #3 singles, the #1 seed, Tasha Allemang of Luther,
defeated the #2 seed, Jenna Morris of Cornell, (6-3, 6-2). Allemang
is now 10-2 overall and undefeated against Iowa Conference opponents
with a mark of 8-0. Morris singles record is now 12-6, 8-2 in the
IIAC.
At #4 singles, Luther's Molly Beyer defeated Central's
Katie Moklestad (6-1, 6-1). Beyer also remained undefeated against
Iowa Conference opponents, raising her record to 8-0. Beyer's overall
mark is now 10-2. Moklestad's overall record stands at 8-4, 6-2
in the IIAC.
At #5 singlest #1Tara Huinker of Luther, defeated
#3 Jessica Horn of Cornell (6-1, 6-0). Huinker, who has yet to lose
this season, is now 8-0 overall, 7-0 in league play. Horn's record
is now 10-7, 5-4.
At #6 singles, #1 Jacie Haroldson of Luther defeated
#3 Kelli Mullen of Wartburg College. Haroldson posted wins of (6-1,
6-0) and is now 6-0 in IIAC action. Her overall record is 9-1. Mullen
moved her record to 8-3, 7-3 in the IIAC.
In doubles competition, Luther crowned two doubles
champions and Central claimed one.
Luther's Kirsten Madsen and Tara Huinker won the
#1 doubles title posting an impressive 8-1 victory over Kristin
Kovar and Tracy Van Zante of Central in the championship match.
Luther was seeded #1 and Central was seeded #2.
At #2 doubles, Central's Katie Moklestad and Lindsey
Yuska, defeated the duo of Annalise Conaway and Tasha Allemang from
Luther, (9-8, (7-5)). This was also a battle of the top two seeds.
Luther was seeded #1 and Central was #2.
At #3 doubles, Luther's Jacie Haroldson and Liesl
Schwerin posted an 8-2 victory over Central's Jennifer Knobbe and
Danielle Dowling. Central was seeded #3, while the Luther duo was
seeded #1.
With all matches completed, the point totals have
been added up to determine the top four teams that will return to
Luther next Saturday, Oct. 16 to play for the 2004 team championship.
This list includes Luther, Central, Cornell and Loras. Point totals
were distributed throughout the tournament with nine points presented
to first place down to one point presented for ninth place.
Luther captured six IIAC titles, two second place
finished and a third, for a tournament best 77 points. Central had
two first place finishes and three second place finishes en route
to 67 points. Cornell captured one title and two second place finishes,
posting a point total of 66 points. Loras did not crown a conference
champion, but did have one second place finish, produced a point
total of 44 points. The remainder of the teams order of finish was
Coe (42), Simpson (41), Wartburg (41), Buena Vista (18) and the
University of Dubuque (9).
The team championships will begin on the campus
of Luther College at 10:00 a.m. on Oct. 16.
