CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Wartburg College sophomore forward Harrison Kibombo-Lugujjo
(Uganda/Fjaler (Norway)) was named 2004 IIAC men’s soccer
Most Valuable Player and that Wartburg head coach Jim Conlon
was named 2004 IIAC men’s soccer Coach of the Year.
Kibombo-Lugujjo had a part in nearly a quarter
of all Wartburg’s goals this season becoming the first Knights’
player to receive Conference MVP honors. He scored 17 goals and
added three assists in 18 matches tying for second in the Iowa Conference
in goals scored and ranking third in points scored (37).
In seven Conference matches, Kibombo-Lugujjo scored
nine goals (30 percent of team’s total) and 19 points, leading the
Conference in both categories. His 2.71 point per game average against
IIAC opponents is the sixth-highest total since 1998 and his 1.29
goal per game average against IIAC opponents is the third-highest
total in that same period.
Conlon, in his fifth year as head coach at Wartburg,
earns Conference Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive
season after leading the Knights to their first-ever Iowa Conference
Championship. Wartburg advances to the second round of the NCAA
Tournament with a 18-1-2 overall record, finished 7-0-1 in Conference
play and won its second straight Conference Tournament.
The IIAC also announced today the 2004 men’s soccer
All-Conference Team. The 26-member Team includes 15 repeat All-Conference
honorees including six individuals who become three-time All-Conference
performers and one, Wartburg’s Verne Houston, who
becomes the IIAC’s second four-time First Team All-Conference performer
(Simpson’s Mike Wilson, 1996-99). Conference Champion
Wartburg has six players on the All-Conference Team, Luther has
five All-Conference performers, and Buena Vista and Loras each have
four.
