CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Coe College senior quarterback Joe Brannen (Colo,
Iowa/Colo-NESCO) has been selected 2004 IIAC football Most Valuable
Player and that Buena Vista University head coach Steve
Osterberger has been selected 2004 IIAC football Coach
of the Year.
Brannen led the Iowa Conference in passing yards
(2,110 yards), total offense (2,278 yards) and ranked second in
pass efficiency (119.28) while re-writing most of Coe’s quarterbacking
records. He completed 157-of-315 passes throwing 15 touchdowns and
just four interceptions, surpassing the 2,000-yard mark for the
third straight season. He concluded his career as Coe’s career leader
in completions (444), attempts (896) and passing yardage (6.407)
while ranking third in career passing touchdowns (47).
Brannen led the Kohawks to a 7-3 overall record,
6-2 in the Iowa Conference and to their second IIAC Championship
in three years while guiding the Conference’s second ranked scoring
offense (28.2 points/game), second ranked passing offense (211.0
yards/game) and second ranked total offense (371.3 yards/game).
In eight Conference games, Brannen completed 131-of-260
passes for 1,811 yards and 14 touchdowns. He had a pass efficiency
rating of 123.59 and averaged 226.4 passing yards per game while
also rushing for 172 yards to finish Conference-play with an IIAC-best
1,983 yards of total offense.
Osterberger, in his fifth-year as Buena Vista head
coach, guided the Beavers to a 6-4 overall record, 5-3 in the Conference
to tie for third-place. He kept the team picked seventh in the Iowa
Conference preseason Coaches’ Poll in title contention until the
season’s final weekend and led the team to its best Conference record
since his first season when the team finished 7-3. The Beavers have
posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1999-2000.
The IIAC also announced today the 2004 football
All-Conference Team. The 54-member Team includes 22 repeat All-Conference
honorees, including five individuals who become three-time All-Conference
performers. Coe had a Conference-best nine All-Conference players
followed by Loras and Luther with eight All-Conference performers
each. Luther had a Conference-high seven First Team members.
