BUENA VISTA’S IRVIN AND WARTBURG’S GIESMANN NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® FOOTBALL TEAM

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Two Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) football players were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division Football Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Buena Vista University linebacker Michael Irvin (Bedford, Iowa/Bedford) and Wartburg College punter Mark Giesmann (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) were both named to the 24-member ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® First Team.

Irvin is a senior mathematics major with a 3.663 grade point average and Giesmann is a senior mathematics/engineering science major with a 3.910 GPA. Giesmann was also a First Team Academic All-America® selection in 2003.

To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-America® Team, a student-athlete must have been selected to the Academic All-District First Team, reached sophomore academic and athletic standing, be a starter or key reserve and possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
