WAVERLY, IOWA . . . Wartburg College
senior women’s cross country/track and field standout Missy
Buttry of Shenandoah will defend her USA Track and Field
national club cross country championship Saturday, Dec. 4, at Portland,
Ore. Senior men’s standout Josh Moen of Fairbank
will also compete in the event.
The club nationals event is set for the Portland
Meadows. The women’s 6K begins at 1:45 p.m. Central Standard Time,
while the men’s 10K is slated for 2:30 p.m. CST. Buttry claimed
the 2003 women’s open title in a time of 19:59.9, edging former
NCAA Division I runner-up Kate O’Neill (20:01.4).
Wartburg’s duo is fresh off repeat national championship
performances on the Division III level.
Buttry set an NCAA record Saturday, Nov. 20, at
Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis., by winning her third consecutive
individual national championship, something no man or woman in any
division had ever accomplished. The Shenandoah native is now one
of four athletes to win three individual national titles in cross-country,
joining the late Steve Prefontaine (University of Oregon), Henry
Rono (Washington St. University) and Gerry Lindgren (Washington
St. University). She was named USAToday.com’s U.S. Olympic Athlete
of the Week Nov. 23.
Moen became the third NCAA Division III men’s
cross-country athlete to win two consecutive titles Nov. 20. He
was the first since 1988 and 1989 to accomplish the feat.
