WAVERLY,
IOWA . . . Wartburg College Athletic Director Rick
Willis announced today that Monica Severson is ending her tenure
as head women’s basketball coach. A search for her replacement
is currently under way.
“We
are extremely appreciative of Coach Severson’s hard work
and dedication to the women’s basketball program over
the past 18 years,” Willis said. “We are hoping
to find an individual to fill the position who can build on
her success.”
Severson
leaves the program as the winningest women’s basketball
coach in Wartburg history. Ranked No. 26 among NCAA Division
III active coaches in winning percentage, she achieved a 335-131
record in 17-plus seasons at the helm. Severson led the Knights
to five Iowa Conference championships and nine NCAA Division
III national tournament appearances, including three Elite Eight
games in 2001, 1993 and 1992.
“It
was time for a change professionally, in order to pursue more
full-time administrative work that I’ve enjoyed and to
spend more time with family,” Severson said. “I
am very thankful to all the women who have been part of the
program and to all of the people who have worked with me to
make Wartburg women’s basketball what it is today. I wish
the program more success down the road.”
