STORM LAKE , IOWA . . . Katie Maguire, a guard on the Buena Vista University women's basketball team, has been named to the ESPN The Magazine 2006 College Division Academic All-America Women's Basketball Third Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Maguire is the third player in the history of the program to earn this honor.

Maguire, a senior elementary education major from Treynor, Iowa, was one of 15 student-athletes voted to the All-American teams. The College Division includes student athletes from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA schools from around the nation.

Maguire, who boasts a 3.775 grade point average, finished the season as the Iowa Conference's leading scorer and concluded her career as one of the top players in school history. Maguire, who recorded her 1,500th career point and 500th career assist earlier this year, averaged 20.3 points and 6.6 assists per game.

Maguire ranks first in school history in career three point shots (238), career assists (511), and free throw percentage (84%), second in career steals (262), and third in career points scored (1,724). Maguire, a 2002 graduate of Treynor High School, is the daughter of Scott Maguire of Treynor, Iowa and Annette Vasicek of Treynor, Iowa.

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Former Buena Vista great Jeannie Demers earned Academic All-America honors in 1985 and 1986. Prior to Maguire, Dana Janning (1991) was the last Beaver women's basketball player who earned the honor.
