WAVERLY, IOWA . . . Wartburg College head men’s and women’s track and field coach Marcus Newsom was named USTFCCCA (United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Division III women’s indoor track and field Central Region Coach of the Year Thursday, March 9.

The honor was presented at the annual indoor national championships pre-meet banquet. According to the USTFCCCA, the national award winners will be announced next week.

Newsom, a native of Kansas City, Kan., earned the women’s Central Region Coach of the Year award for a combined seventh time in indoor and outdoor track and field since he took over the Knights’ programs in 1998. Wartburg opens the 2006 NCAA Division III indoor national championships Friday, March 10, with 11 men’s and women’s events in action, as the women look for a fourth consecutive national meet trophy and the men seek a top-15 team finish for the sixth time in the last seven years.
