COE WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

April 27, 2006

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . For the fourth time in five years Coe College and Luther College met in the Championship match of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) men’s tennis Team Tournament, and as it has on all previous occasions, Coe came away victorious. The top-seeded Kohawks posted a 4-1 win over the second-seeded Norse in the team portion of the three-day Conference Championship held in Cedar Rapids.

Coe improved to 27-5 on the season with the victory and Luther fell to 18-13. En route to the Championship match, Coe and Luther both posted 4-0 victories in the semifinals, Coe over #4 Wartburg College and Luther over #3 Central College. Coe has won six straight Iowa Conference titles, the longest streak since Luther won eight straight from 1988-95.

Central defeated Wartburg in the third-place match (4-0) and Cornell College defeated Simpson College in the fifth-place match (4-2). Wartburg defeated #5 Simpson and Central defeated #6 Cornell in opening round matches, both by scores of 4-0.

The complete match-by-match results from the men’s tennis Team Tournament are here.

The IIAC men’s tennis Championship continues Friday and Saturday (April 28-29) with the Individual Flighted Tournament beginning with singles matches at 8:30 a.m. at Coe College (Flight A) and Veterans Park (Flights B and C). Due to forecasted inclement weather in the Cedar Rapids area for the two days, locations and schedule for the Individual Tournament could be adjusted. The latest information will be available on the Iowa Conference web site (www.iowaconference.com). Brackets for the three singles flights and two doubles flights are here.
