MOUNT
VERNON , IOWA . . . Dan Schofer, an assistant cross
country and track and field coach at Rhodes College (Tenn.)
the past four years, has been named head men’s and women’s
cross country and assistant men’s and women’s track
and field coach at Cornell College.
“I want to raise the level of expectations at Cornell
so we can be competitive at the conference level and beyond,”
Schofer said. “One goal is to get the numbers up to build
a strong team and a strong tradition. I am really excited about
this position.”
A native of Wilmette, Illinois, Schofer graduated magna cum
laude in biology from Carleton College in 2000. He was a three-time
Academic All-America selection in cross country and an Academic
All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference choice. Schofer
earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the
University of Oregon in December 2001.
While at Carleton, Schofer was twice named cross country team
captain and was the most valuable runner in 1999. During the
1999 season he was all-region and a national championship individual
qualifier. In track and field, Schofer was also a two-time team
captain and was all-conference three times.
Schofer
was a teaching assistant and instructor at the University of
Oregon. He assisted with the Carleton women’s track and
field team in 2002.
“Coach Schofer will be an excellent head coach and I’m
thrilled to have him take the reigns of our cross country program,”
Cornell Athletics Director Tina Hill said. “His experience
at Rhodes and Carleton has provided him with a strong foundation
and his passion for running is contagious.”
Former
Cornell cross country head coach Lonnie Speidel will remain
as the school’s head men’s and women’s track
and field coach and assist with the cross country program.
