DECORAH,
IOWA . . . Joe Thompson, Luther College director of
intercollegiate athletics, has appointed David Lester
the new head coach of the Luther College women’s
golf program. Lester succeeds Jason Berg who resigned in May
accepting a teaching and coaching position in Farmington, Minn.
Lester,
joins the Luther athletic department with a wealth of high school
and collegiate golf experience. He was a four-year letter winner
at Indianola High School and three-times was crowned the Iowa
Sectional Junior PGA champion. He also earned four letters as
a member of the Millsaps College golf team (1988-1991) in Jackson,
Mississippi, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English.
“David’s
enthusiasm and passion for the sport coupled with his skills
as a teacher and player makes him a wonderful addition to our
staff,” stated Thompson. “We look forward to David’s
leadership and the positive experience he will provide our women
golfers.”
Lester has
been a member of the Luther College staff since 1996 as the
Cash Operations Manager. He has continued to play and teach
the game of golf developing a “Whole Brain Golf”
class for Luther’s Lutherlag program.
“I
have had a passion for the game of golf since I was three years
old when my father would take me out with him to the course,”
Lester said. “I believe my competitive experience and
teaching ability in the game can help take the women’s
program to a new level of competition,” Lester added.
“I’m very excited to be coaching a program that
has a lot of potential to compete for the conference championship
each year.”
Lester lives
in Decorah and has three children Oran (11), Aidan (8) and Finn
(4).
