DECORAH, IOWA . . . Joe Thompson, Luther College director of intercollegiate athletics, has appointed David Lester the new head coach of the Luther College women’s golf program. Lester succeeds Jason Berg who resigned in May accepting a teaching and coaching position in Farmington, Minn.

Lester, joins the Luther athletic department with a wealth of high school and collegiate golf experience. He was a four-year letter winner at Indianola High School and three-times was crowned the Iowa Sectional Junior PGA champion. He also earned four letters as a member of the Millsaps College golf team (1988-1991) in Jackson, Mississippi, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English.

“David’s enthusiasm and passion for the sport coupled with his skills as a teacher and player makes him a wonderful addition to our staff,” stated Thompson. “We look forward to David’s leadership and the positive experience he will provide our women golfers.”

Lester has been a member of the Luther College staff since 1996 as the Cash Operations Manager. He has continued to play and teach the game of golf developing a “Whole Brain Golf” class for Luther’s Lutherlag program.

“I have had a passion for the game of golf since I was three years old when my father would take me out with him to the course,” Lester said. “I believe my competitive experience and teaching ability in the game can help take the women’s program to a new level of competition,” Lester added. “I’m very excited to be coaching a program that has a lot of potential to compete for the conference championship each year.”

Lester lives in Decorah and has three children Oran (11), Aidan (8) and Finn (4).
