CENTRAL'S BARNES NAMED TO AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM

September 14, 2005
(Information from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Central College sports information office used in this release)

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Central College senior wide receiver Stephen Barnes (Clarion, Iowa/Goldfield) was named to the 2005 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team®.

Barnes, a biology/chemistry major with a 3.92 grade point average, spent 10 days on a work trip to Reynosa, Mexico through Central’s Campus Ministries. He also spent a spring break on a work trip for the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challege in Columbus, Ga. Last spring and summer he served as a volunteer in the long-term care department of the Pella Regional Health Center. On campus, he’s served as Bible study leader for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF), was an IVCF freshman retreat group leader and last spring was the promotion chair for the campus Relay for Life, a student-initiated event which raised money to fight cancer.

“Stephen is very deserving of this award,” Central coach Jeff McMartin said. “He does things the right way in everything he does. As we look to continue to build the Central football program, Stephen is exactly the type of person we want to have as a part of our team.”

The 11-man team, combined from Divisions I-AA, II, III and the NAIA, honor players for their dedication and commitment to community service. From 1992-1996, the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting the teams.

“It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities,” AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. “Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities.”

Criteria: Nominations were submitted to the AFCA by the college sports information departments. Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or involved in other community service activities. Candidates have to display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Athletic ability is not a criteria.
