WOMEN'S TENNIS INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT - DAY ONE RECAP

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Luther College advanced players to the finals in seven of nine flights of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) women’s tennis Individual Tournament at Veterans Park Tennis Courts. Coe College advanced players to the finals in five flights and Cornell College advanced players in four flights. Central College and Loras College each advanced players in one flight.

The Individual Tournament continues at 9:00 a.m. Saturday with the fifth- and seventh-place singles matches followed by the third-place and Championship singles matches and then the doubles place matches. Six Championship matches, five singles and one doubles will feature the #1-seed vs. the #2-seed. In #4 singles and #3 doubles, the #1-seed will play the #3-seed for the title. In #2 doubles Championship match, the #3-seed will play the #4-seed.

Four of the singles Championship matches feature an individual looking for their second straight title:

#1 Singles - Two-time Conference Most Valuable Player Marie Schutte of Cornell, the #2-seed will defend her title against Coe freshman top-seed Molly Fiala.

#3 Singles - Luther’s Molly Beyer will face Cornell’s Emily Loewen in the #3-singles Championship match. Beyer won the #4-singles title last year.

#4 Singles - Luther’s Tasha Allemang, who won at #3 singles last year, will face Coe’s Lindsay Driscoll for the title at #4-singles. Driscoll, the #3-seed posted the only upset in singles semifinals with a three-set victory over #2-seed Jenna Morris of Cornell (4-6, 7-5, 10-6).

#5 Singles – Luther’s Tara Huinker will look to defend her title at #5 singles against Cornell’s Jessica Horn.

Players earn their team nine points for winning a flight, eight points for a second-place finish and down to one point for a ninth-place finish. Teams with the four highest point totals after this weekends Individual Tournament will meet next Saturday, Oct. 15, at Central College in Pella for the IIAC Team Tournament.
