CENTRAL’S VANCE SCHURING NAMED FOOTBALL MVP; CENTRAL’S JEFF McMARTIN NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR; FOOTBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM ANNOUNCED

November 16, 2005

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Central College sophomore running back Vance Schuring (Pella, Iowa/Pella) has been named the 2005 IIAC football Most Valuable Player and Central head coach Jeff McMartin has been named 2005 IIAC football Coach of the Year.

Schuring rushed for 1,303 yards and 16 touchdowns on 274 carries in 10 regular season games. With the NCAA playoffs remaining, his rushing yards are the fifth-most in a season by a Central rusher and his touchdowns are the third-most. He also had six receptions during the year for 54 yards and completed his only pass attempt for a 12-yard touchdown to give him 1,357 all-purpose yards and 1,315 yards of total offense.

He led the Conference in rushing yards, ranked second in all-purpose yards and scoring (96 points), and was the only non-quarterback in the top-10 of total offense (9th). He had eight 100-yard rushing games on the season and four games in which he scored three touchdowns.

McMartin, in his second season as head coach at Central, led the Dutch to a 9-1 overall regular season record and a 7-1 mark in the Iowa Conference to tie for its 27th Conference title. Central’s lone loss came against Conference co-Champion and fellow NCAA qualifier, Coe College. The Dutch improved on a 6-4 mark in McMartin’s first season to earn its NCAA record-tying 17th trip to the NCAA playoffs. Under his guidance this year, Central ranks among the Iowa Conference’s top-three in 13 statistical categories, including leading the IIAC in rushing offense, kickoff returns, punting and fourth down conversions.

The IIAC also announced today the 2005 football All-Conference Team. The 54-member Team includes 23 repeat All-Conference honorees, including six individuals who become three-time All-Conference performers. Conference co-Champion Coe College has a Conference-best 12 All-Conference players including seven First Team members. Simpson College has nine All-Conference players, co-Champion Central and Wartburg College each have seven All-Conference performers.
