STORM
LAKE, IOWA . . . Jodi Coleman, a defender on the Buena
Vista University women's soccer team, has been named to the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Soccer
Second Team College Division as selected by the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Coleman, a junior
business education major from Denison, Iowa, was one of 22 student-athletes
currently attending NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and
NAIA institutions to be named to the Academic All-America first
or second teams.
Coleman,
a two-time all-conference player, registered a school-record
seven assists this season. Buena Vista broke the school record
for wins in a season by going 7-11 this fall. Coleman started
all 18 games for the Beavers. She has posted a cumulative grade
point average of 3.96.
Coleman
was the only Iowa Conference women's soccer player named to
the Academic All-America Teams. She is the first Academic All-American
in the nine-year history of the women's soccer program at Buena
Vista. Coleman, who is the 20th Academic All-American in the
entire BVU athletic program's history, was placed on the national
ballot by virtue of being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District
First Team earlier this month.
The Academic
All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes
annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing
field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through
voting by CoSIDA; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports
public relations professionals for colleges and universities
in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible,
a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve,
maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have
reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her
current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information
director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has
bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes
in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship
sports.
