LORAS’ WHITE NAMED MEN’S BASKETBALL MVP; LORAS’ WALTHALL NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR; MEN’S BASKETBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM ANNOUNCED

CEDAR RAPIDS , IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Loras College junior forward Kyle White (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) has been named the 2006-07 IIAC men’s basketball Most Valuable Player and Loras head coach Chad Walthall has been named the 2006-07 IIAC men’s basketball Coach of the Year.

White led a balanced Loras attacked in scoring and rebounding with 13.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in 26 contests, leading Loras in scoring nine times and rebounding 13 times. He ranked fourth in the Conference in rebounding, 11th in scoring and tied for 12th in field goal percentage (50.0 percent, 136-of-272). Sixty-two of his 179 rebounds were on the offensive boards, most in the IIAC.

In 15 Conference games, White recorded five double-doubles, second most in the IIAC. He averaged 14.2 points (9th in IIAC) and 7.9 rebounds (3rd) per game. He had a Conference-high 39 offensive rebounds and ranked 12th in field goal percentage (48.8 percent).

Walthall led Loras to its first Iowa Conference title since 1950-51, its sixth overall, with a 15-1 Conference record. The Duhawks enter their first NCAA Division III Tournament with a 21-6 overall record, their sixth winning season in seven years under Walthall. The 15 Conference wins are Loras’ most since re-joining the IIAC in 1986, and the 21 wins are the schools most since joining Division III that same year. The Duhawks held their Conference opponents under their season scoring average in all 16 Conference games, and in Conference games, led the IIAC in scoring defense (61.1 points/game), scoring margin (+9.2), field goal percentage defense (40.6 percent) and rebounding margin (+5.4). Walthall is the first Loras men’s basketball coach to earn Conference Coach of the Year honors.

The IIAC also announced today the 2006-07 men’s basketball All-Conference Team. The 15-member Team includes eight repeat All-Conference performers including University of Dubuque’s Nick Thomas who becomes the 56th three-time All-Conference pick. Loras and Simpson both had three All-Conference performers. Central, Coe and Dubuque each had two All-Conference selections.
