STORM
LAKE, IOWA . . . Buena Vista University head men's
and women's track and field coach and head men and women’s
cross country coach Brett Carney has announced
his resignation effective at the end of the outdoor track and
field season. Carney will be leaving Buena Vista to pursue a
career in sports marketing.
"I
would like to thank Coach Carney for his dedication to the cross
country and track programs for six years," said athletics
director Jan Travis. "He is a team player in athletics
and has always been willing to help others on campus and in
the community. I wish Brett and his family the best as they
enter a new chapter in their lives."
Carney joined
the coaching staff during the 2001-02 school year. During his
time with the Beavers, he has coached three All-Americans, 14
Iowa Conference champions, and a total of 87 all-conference
performers. Carney’s athletes have broken 40 school records
and have earned academic all-conference honors 51 times. Last
month, the men’s and women's track and field teams both
had their best-ever finishes at the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships.
"In
a lot of ways, this has been the best job of my life, and I
will really miss working with all the great students here at
BVU," Carney commented. "The student-athletes on my
teams have made this job very rewarding and I will certainly
miss each and every one of them."
Carney,
a three-time All-American during his collegiate career at Iowa
State University, was previously the head cross country/track
and field coach at Missouri Valley College and an assistant
track and field coach/fitness instructor at Johnson County Community
College. Carney has also worked with USA Track and Field as
an association meet director and area president.
"This
was a very tough decision for me to step down," said Carney.
"Coaching over three different seasons every year really
took its toll on me, both mentally and physically. I am really
looking forward to spending more time with my family."
Carney will
be a marketing director for Championship Productions Inc., a
company that is based out of Ames, Iowa. He will be working
for his former track and field coach at Iowa State, Bill Bergan.
Travis stated
that a search for Carney’s replacement will begin immediately
