LORAS NAMES FOOTBALL FIELD AFTER LONGTIME COACH BOB BIERIE

September 19, 2006
Release courtesy of Tim Calderwood, Loras College sports information director

DUBUQUE, IOWA . . . The football field at the Rock Bowl will officially have a new name on Saturday, Bierie Field. The field will be rededicated in a pregame ceremony commencing at 12:40 pm prior to the game against the University of Dubuque to rename the field after the 25-year boss of Loras football.

The field has been able to be renamed due to the generosity of former players under Bierie, who have donated $500,000 to date, with a goal of $1,000,000.

Bob Bierie served as the Head Football Coach at his alma mater from 1980-2004. He finished with a career record of 144-106-5, which are the most victories and games coached in the school’s football history.

Under Bierie’s guidance, the Duhawks won seven or more games nine times, including two eight win seasons in 1983 and 1985. Loras also rejoined the Iowa Conference and became a member of Division III under his watch, as he served as the Director of Athletics at Loras from 1985-97. The Duhawks joined the IIAC for the second time in 1986.

From 1980 to 1985, Bierie built the Duhawks into a strong competitor in the NAIA while producing 21 all-district players. The 1985 team finished with an overall record of 8-2-1, and was ranked 20th nationally. Bierie teams posted 20 shutouts in his 25 years.

It is fitting that the field will be renamed before a game with the University of Dubuque. Bierie ended his career with a 28-7 win over Dubuque on November 6, 2004. He also guided Loras to 20 straight wins over the Spartans, a streak started in 1985.

Nearly 80 of his former players or staff are now either administrators or coaches at the high school or collegiate level including three who are current members of the Loras staff (Ross Dillavou, B.J. Main, and Andy Althoff).
