CEDAR
FALLS, IOWA . . . In a record setting second round
at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) women’s
golf Championship at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course, Wartburg College
shot an IIAC Championship record 306 to take a four stroke lead
over Simpson College and Wartburg’s Andrea Schiltz
shot a 75 to finish the first weekend at 3-over-par
147, the lowest mid-point score since the IIAC went to a 72-hole
Championship in 2003.
The
Knights were tied with Simpson at 322 following 18-holes and
sit at 628 heading into next weekend’s final two rounds.
Simpson is at 632. Loras is third overall at 649 after shooting
a second round 322. Buena Vista, which posted the third-best
team score on Saturday (320) and is fourth with a 652.
Wartburg
was led by three scores in the 70s, including an IIAC record-tying
72 by Daina Deery, Schiltz’s 75 and Megan
Cress’ 76. Simpson also had three players in
the 70s – Katie Vaux (74), Jess
Harvey (76) and Megan Smith (78).
A total of nine players posted sub-80 scores on Saturday as
Buena Vista’s Jen Stork (76), Loras’
Amy Kemp (77), and Loras’ Stephanie
Schwartz (79) joined the six players from Wartburg
and Simpson.
Individually
after 36-holes, Schiltz (72-75-147) holds a four stroke lead
over Stork (75-76-141) and a five stroke lead over Vaux (78-74-152).
Rounding out the top-5 are Harvey (78-76-154), Schwartz (77-79-156)
and Central’s Sharilyne Hoekstra (74-82-156).
The 72-hole
Championship continues next weekend, October 6-7, at The Meadows
Golf Club in Asbury. Tee times on Friday begin at 10:00 a.m.
with players from Coe, Cornell and Dubuque teeing off first.
Buena Vista, Central and Luther players will play together during
the middle set of tee times, and Wartburg, Simpson and Loras
will play together. Saturday’s tee times start at 9:00
a.m. with pairings determined by individual score after 54-holes.
