ASBURY,
IOWA . . . Simpson College won its Iowa Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (IIAC) record ninth women’s golf Championship,
shooting a final round 357 at The Meadows Golf Club on Saturday
to finish the 72-hole Championship at 1321 (322-310-332-357)
and earn the Conference’s inaugural automatic bid to the
NCAA Championship at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. in May. Buena
Vista University senior Jennifer Stork took
home individual Medalist honors posting her fourth round in
the 70s, a 78 for an IIAC 72-hole Championship record 306 (75-76-77-78).
Simpson
outdistanced two-time defending Champion Wartburg by six strokes
(322-306-341-358—1327) to win its first Conference title
since 2002 and qualify for the expanded national field. Loras,
Buena Vista and Central shot the final round’s top team
score of 348, and finished third (1344), fourth (1351) and fifth
(1362), respectively.
Stork
broke the Conference’s previous 72-hole low of 314 set
last year by Wartburg’s Erin Dohlman. Stork is a three-time
All-Conference (top-10 finish) performer after finishing fourth
in 2004 and second last year. She finished nine strokes ahead
of Wartburg’s Andrea Schiltz, who was
second at 72-75-84-84—315. Following a scorecard tie-breaker,
Loras’ Amy Kemp (81-77-82-89—329)
finished third and Simpson’s Katie Vaux (78-74-82-95—329)
finished fourth.
A
scorecard tie-breaker gave Central’s Sharilyne
Hoekstra (74-82-88-86—330) fifth-place and Simpson’s
Jess Harvey (78-76-87-89—330) sixth-place.
Loras’ Brooke Davis (331), Wartburg’s
Megan Cress (334) and Simpson’s Megan
Smith (337) finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.
Simpson’s Noel Treibel (339) defeated
Wartburg’s Kate Thompson on the first
hole of a sudden death playoff to finish 10th and round out
the All-Conference honorees.
Stork,
Schiltz and Cress are three-time All-Conference performers,
bringing the all-time total to 18. Kemp and Hoekstra join a
list of 34 other two-time All-Conference performers.
Under
a new Conference policy this year, ties for second through ninth
place are determined by nine-hole scores starting from the final
nine today. Ties for Medalist and tenth-place are determined
by a sudden death playoff.
For
the 11th time since 1990, Simpson head coach Bob Darrah
was named Iowa Conference women’s golf Coach
of the Year. He led the Storm to its Conference-record ninth
Championship.
