LUTHER WINS MEN’S & WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TITLES; LORAS’ GRANT & LUTHER’S DOBYNS WIN INDIVIDUAL TITLES, NAMED MOST VALUABLE RUNNERS

IOWA CITY , IOWA . . . Behind six women and five men finishing in the top-10, Luther College swept the women and men’s Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) cross country Championships at Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City on Saturday. Loras College junior Ben Grant and Luther sophomore Janet Dobyns took home individual titles win 24:18 and 23:05, respectively, and earned Conference Most Valuable Runner honors.

The Luther men edged eight-time defending Champion Wartburg College by two points (34-36) to earn its 28th overall men’s title, first since 1995. Central College finished third with 97 points followed by Loras with 101 points.

The Norse women (22 points) won convincingly over runner-up Wartburg (68 points) to earn their IIAC-record 10th title, third in the last four years. Loras College finished third with 95 points followed by host Cornell College with 110 points.

Individually, Grant, who finished third last year and fourth two years ago, won the 8,000-meter men’s race by five seconds over Wartburg sophomore Brian Chenoweth (24:23) and by 17 seconds over Wartburg senior Patrick Johnson (24:35). Luther senior Adam Bohach became the 14th Iowa Conference men’s runner to earn All-Conference honors (top-15 finish) four times. He finished fourth in 24:36 adding to his runner-up finish last year, fourth-place finish in 2003 and eighth-place finish in 2002. Luther sophomore David McKay finished fifth (24:39).

Dobyns, who finished fourth last year, won the 6,000-meter women’s race by six seconds over Wartburg senior Jill Wagaman (23:11). Wagaman became the 17th Iowa Conference women’s runner to earn All-Conference honors four times adding to her fifth-place finish in 2005, seventh-place finish in 2004 and 14th-place in 2003. A trio of Luther sophomores round out the top-five – Elise Bennett (3rd, 23:17), Rachel Wobeter (4th, 23:30) and Devin Parker (5th, 23:40).

Coaches of the Year: Luther coaches, Steve and Yarrow Pasche, were named Iowa Conference men’s and women’s cross country Coaches of the Year after guiding the Norse to the Conference titles.
