WARTBURG’S KIBOMBO-LUGUJJO NAMED MEN’S SOCCER MVP; LORAS’ ROTHERT NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR; MEN’S SOCCER ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM ANNOUNCED

November 7, 2006

CEDAR RAPIDS , IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College senior forward Harrison Kibombo-Lugujjo (Kampala, Uganda/RCNUWC (Norway)) has been named the 2006 IIAC men’s soccer Most Valuable Player and Loras College head coach Dan Rothert has been named the 2006 IIAC men’s soccer Coach of the Year.

Kibombo-Lugujjo, the Conference’s first two-time men’s soccer MVP (also earning the honor in 2004), led Wartburg to a share of its third straight Iowa Conference Championship, its third Conference Tournament title in four years and its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Entering NCAA play this weekend, he has scored a Conference-high 26 goals and 58 points to go along with eight assists (t-8th). He has also netted nine game winning goals, tops in the Conference. Kibombo-Lugujjo has eight multi-goal games, has recorded at least one point in 17 of 20 matches and one goal in 16 of 20 contests. Wartburg lost two of the three games that Kibombo-Lugujjo did not register a point.

In eight Conference matches, he scored eight goals, had four assists and 20 points. He finished second in the Conference in points scored, third in goals and tied for third in assists.

Rothert led Loras to a share of its first Iowa Conference Championship since 2003 and an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. Loras enters NCAA play with a 13-4-2 overall record after finishing IIAC play with a 7-1 record, its best Conference mark since 2003. After losing two of their first four games, the Duhawks finished the regular season with 11 wins in their final 13 games (11-1-1). This is the second consecutive year Rothert has been honored as the Iowa Conference men’s soccer Coach of the Year after earning similar women’s soccer honors four times.

The IIAC also announced today the 2006 men’s soccer All-Conference Team. The 26-member Team includes 10 repeat All-Conference performers including Kibombo-Lugujjo and Buena Vista’s Dustin Bonnett who become three-time All-Conference selections. Regular season co-Champions Wartburg and Loras had seven and six All-Conference performers, respectively including four First Team members each. Central College had five All-Conference players.
