Note:
D3hoops.com is celebrating a decade of NCAA Division
III men's and women's basketball coverage this month by naming
its All-Decade Teams. The Web site, which became the first piece
of the D3sports.com network at the beginning of the 1997-98
season, honored five teams of five players each from the past
10 seasons. Loras' Alicia Davis, a two-time
All-American, was the only Iowa Conference player recognized,
being named Honorable Mention. The full team is listed below.
Player biographies and statistics can be found at http://www.d3hoops.com/all-american/women-alldecade.html:
DUBUQUE,
Iowa . . . The Loras College women’s basketball
team benefited in a big way when local basketball star and Dubuque
native Alicia Davis arrived on campus in the fall of 2000. Now,
four years removed from the program, she has been named to the
d3hoops.com All-Decade team. The time frame for the team was
the first ten seasons since the website’s inception prior
to the 1996-1997 season.
When
the team was recently announced, Alicia Davis (Kapp - she has
since been married and gave birth to her first child in November)
was named “Honorable Mention”. She remains the NCAA
III record holder in career field goal percentage (68.7%) and
holds three of the top eight single-season efforts as well.
She is Loras’ all time leading scorer (1,716 points),
rebounder (997), and shot blocker (307).
“The
Loras women’s basketball experience helped me realize
that you have to work hard to accomplish the goals you set for
yourself, whether it is at your job…or raising a family,”
Kapp said this week. “Looking back, my time with the team
helped me realize that once I was out on my own, that life isn’t
going to be easy, and that you need to be willing to learn at
all times.”
Her
four year learning experience with the team at Loras wasn’t
limited to the practices and games and floor time. “There
are a lot of nice people you meet if you are willing to go out
to meet them,” Alicia added. “You don’t always
realize how much you are learning about yourself until you are
out in the real world and using those skills you went to college
to acquire.”
Alicia
was proud of the first women’s team (2002-2003) to win
the IIAC tournament title and play in the NCAA Division III
Tournament. “I will always remember that team, because
we won in the Fieldhouse and it was filled with people supporting
women’s basketball.”
She
was also very thankful for the opportunity to play in Dubuque.
“It meant a lot to me to play in my hometown and in front
of my family. I was also able to play with one of my best friends
(2004 alum - Erin Boxleiter). When I began coaching at Hempstead
High School, they knew who I was and they were excited to learn
from someone they were able to watch play through college.”
Former
Loras head coach Tam Tills was clear on the
impact Alicia had on the program when she took a few moments
to comment during the nomination process. "The presence
of Alicia Davis on the basketball court took Loras College to
a new competitive level. Opponents had to adjust their game
plans to defend someone of her stature and production,”
Tills said.
Alicia
currently resides in Dubuque with her husband Jeremy and their
first child.
